மாண்புமிகு தமிழ்நாட்டு முதலமைச்சர் அவர்களுக்கு,
தற்போது ஆங்கிலத்தில் பயன்படுத்தப்படும் "Tamil" மற்றும் "Tamil Nadu" என்ற எழுத்துக்கூட்டுகள், நமது தாய்மொழியின் மற்றும் மாநிலத்தின் உண்மையான ஒலிப்பை உலகிற்குச் சரியாக உணர்த்துவதில்லை. தமிழ் மொழிக்கே சிறப்பான ‘ழ’ கர ஒலியை ஆங்கிலத்தின் 'l' என்ற எழுத்து முழுமையாகப் பிரதிபலிப்பதில்லை. இதனால் உலகளவில் நமது மொழியின் பெயர் தவறாக உச்சரிக்கப்படும் சூழல் நிலவுகிறது. Thamizh மற்றும் Thamizhnaadu என மாற்றுவது, ஆங்கிலத்தில் வாசிப்பவர்களுக்கும் சரியான உச்சரிப்பை வழங்கும்.
மாற்றத்தின் இன்றியமையாமை:
ஒரு மொழியின் பெயர் அதன் கலாச்சார அடையாளம். சரியான ஒலிப்பெயர்ப்பை (Phonetic Transliteration) பயன்படுத்துவது, உலக அரங்கில் நமது தாய்மொழியின் மற்றும் மாநிலத்தின் பெருமையைச் சரியாகக் கொண்டு சேர்க்க உதவும்.
முன்னுதாரணங்கள்:
உலகெங்கிலும் மற்றும் இந்தியாவிலும் பல நாடுகள், மாநிலங்கள் மற்றும் நகரங்கள் தங்கள் பாரம்பரிய தாய்மொழி உச்சரிப்பைப் பிரதிபலிக்கும் வகையில் ஆங்கிலப் பெயர்களை மாற்றியுள்ளன:
துருக்கி (Turkey ➔ Türkiye): தாய்மொழி உச்சரிப்பைப் பாதுகாக்க அதிகாரப்பூர்வமாகப் பெயர் மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டது.
பெய்ஜிங் (Peking ➔ Beijing) & குவாங்சூ (Canton ➔ Guangzhou): பாரம்பரிய ஒலியமைப்பை அடைவதற்காக மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டது.
ஒரிசா ➔ ஒடிசா (Orissa ➔ Odisha) & மதராஸ் ➔ சென்னை (Madras ➔ Chennai): உள்ளூர் மொழி அடையாளத்தைப் மீட்டெடுக்க இந்தியாவில் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட மாற்றங்கள்.

தமிழ்நாடு அரசு, அரசு ஆவணங்கள், அதிகாரப்பூர்வ அறிவிப்புகள் மற்றும் பாடப்புத்தகங்களில் மாநிலத்தின் ஆங்கிலப் பெயரை Thamizhnaadu என்றும், மொழியின் ஆங்கிலப் பெயரை Thamizh என்றும் அதிகாரப்பூர்வமாக மாற்றிட அரசாணை வெளியிட வேண்டுமாய் தாழ்மையுடன் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம்.

The Issue:
The current English spellings—"Tamil" and "Tamil Nadu"—do not accurately reflect the authentic phonetic pronunciation of our language and state. The unique retroflex approximant letter ‘ழ’ (Ḻ) is central to our heritage and identity. Using 'l' or 'lh' fails to convey the correct sound to non-native speakers, leading to mispronunciation worldwide. Changing the official English spelling to Thamizh and Thamizhnaadu ensures the phonetic reading is much closer to the true vernacular pronunciation.
Why Proper Pronunciation Matters:
Transliteration shapes global perception. Standardizing the spelling as "Thamizh" and "Thamizhnaadu" accurately expresses the identity, culture, and linguistic richness of our land to the global community.
Global & National Precedents:
Renaming regions and languages to reflect native phonetics and traditional vernacular names is a globally accepted and respected standard:
Turkey to Türkiye: Updated globally to preserve native pronunciation and cultural identity.
Peking to Beijing & Canton to Guangzhou: Shifted to accurately represent native Mandarin/pinyin phonetics.
Czech Republic to Czechia: Adopted for cultural alignment and simplified international expression.
Orissa to Odisha & Bombay to Mumbai & Madras to Chennai: Precedents within India where state and city names were officially amended to match native pronunciation and cultural heritage.
Our Request:
We respectfully request the Government of Tamil Nadu to pass an official resolution updating the state's English spelling to Thamizhnaadu and the language's English name to Thamizh in all government documents, official communications, and educational literature.
